Ebrima Sohna

He scored Gambia’s only goal against Mexico in a friendly on the 30th of May 2010, and that was his first senior national team goal after twelve appearances. Ebrima Sohna’s prowess has all the time got him so committed in getting the ball to the striking force and holding firm the bridge between the defence and the attack.

Born December 14, 1988 in Banjul, Ebrima, who began his career in the academy of Wallidan FC, was the holding mid-fielder in the brilliant Gambian under-17 squad that won the 2005 CAF U-17 Championship hosted in Banjul. He went on to be a key part of the Gambian team which beat Brazil in the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship in Peru.

Sohna also helped the Gambia U-20 to qualify for the CAF U-20 Youth Championship hosted in Congo in 2007, where The Gambia came out third position thus qualifying for the FIFA U-20 Youth Championship in Canada.

Ebrima Sohna plays his professional football in Norway with Sandefjord Fotball. The club plays in the Norwegian Premier League (Tippeligaen). Ebrima signed with Sandefjord in 2007 and has since made 72 appearances scoring two goals.

Gambian players abroad

Even with a population under 2 million, Gambian players abroad have been making a distinct impact in the Football (Soccer) world. Toronto FC of the Major League Soccer (MLS) association has two players in their ranks, Amadou Sanyang and Emmanuel Gómez. Both players are in their first year with the club and have made significant contributions to the team coming off the bench and in some cases even in a starting role. Other Gambian players in MLS include Sanna Nyassi (Seattle Sounders FC), Sainey Nyassi and Kenny Mansally (New England Revolution). Other Gambian players who play outside The Gambia, in Norway, are Muhamed

Keita (Strømsgodset IF), Tijan Jaiteh (SK Brann) and Ebrima Sohna (Sandefjord Fotball). The Former England under 21 international Cherno Samba was fully capped by Gambia. There is another Gambian young star called Abdouranman Dampha who is currently playing at a Swiss club. Another Gambian young star called Waterman is currently at a top club in America; he appears to be the second youngest and most fascinating player of the league. Yet another young footballer from The Gambia is Herb Herbertson who is a midfielder for D.C. United. Foreign based big names such as Edrissa Sonko, Ebou Sillah, Pa Dembo, Jatto Ceesay opened the way for the younger players.
